(April, 2008) Over 170 people turned out for Advocates for Children's (AFC) Second Benefit Concert and Auction held annually in support of San Mateo County's foster children and youth. This year's festivities, held at the Little Fox Theatre in Redwood City, featured an energetic and passionate R & B performance by singer Earl Thomas and his band. Earl's down-home, earthy style resonated with the crowd who danced and cheered throughout his hour long set. "We were extremely pleased with the outpouring of support this year." stated Yvonne Kerno AFC's Director of Development & Marketing. "Our community got behind us in the form of corporate sponsorships, in-kind donations of auction items and food, as well as advertising materials and even event T-shirts. The combined donations helped us raise over $20,000 of critical funds and enabled us to put on a fun event for our friends and supporters."
Perhaps most poignant however, were the presentations by former Santa Clara Juvenile Court Judge and champion of Court Appointed special Advocate (CASA) programs nationwide, Judge Leonard Edwards, and former foster youth Justin Willis. Both speakers emphasized the fundamental need for Advocates, "Who will a child call when they need help - their lawyer, the judge? No, they'll call their Advocate." stated Judge Edwards. Justin, who had an Advocate for five years, finished his speech with a simple but powerful message saying "And all of you will be able to save a life. Give kids an Advocate."
Business supporters of this event included Borel Private Bank & Trust, First National Bank of Northern California, Moquin Press, Revel Industries and The Little Fox Theatre.
